ABOUT THE CLASS

Designed for older students, this course combines Russian language study with more mature reading and discussion of Russian-language literary texts.

Students learn to read closely, notice important details, consider themes and character development, and discuss how meaning is created within a text. The emphasis moves beyond understanding “what happened” toward examining why it happened and what ideas the author invites the reader to consider.

Alongside literature, students continue to strengthen their Russian grammar and writing skills. They work with sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and age-appropriate grammatical concepts, learning to apply them in both written work and their own expression.

Literary discussion further supports language development by giving students opportunities to expand vocabulary, formulate more complex thoughts and express themselves with greater precision in Russian.

HOW WE LEARN

Language and literature are taught together. Students work with grammar and writing in context, while literary texts provide material for vocabulary development, discussion and written expression.

Students read closely, discuss, compare interpretations, explore vocabulary and examine important moments within a text. Questions are used not simply to test comprehension, but to encourage students to explain their reasoning, consider different perspectives and develop independent responses to literature.
