Russian Language / Reading — Grade 1

This class helps children strengthen their Russian through reading while developing the language skills they need to understand, discuss, write and express ideas with greater confidence.

Students work with age-appropriate Russian texts, learning to read more attentively and understand not only individual words, but the meaning of sentences and the text as a whole. Reading becomes a starting point for conversation: children answer questions, talk about characters and events, explain what happened and share their own thoughts.

Special attention is given to vocabulary and sentence construction. Children learn to use new words in context and gradually make their spoken Russian clearer, richer and more complete.

Age-appropriate writing and grammar are integrated into the class, helping students develop correct spelling, sentence structure and written expression. Children practice writing words and sentences, work with basic grammar concepts and reinforce the connection between spoken and written Russian.

HOW WE LEARN

Reading is combined with conversation, writing, questions, vocabulary and grammar work, as well as activities that help children think about what they have read. Students are encouraged to predict, explain, compare, describe, retell and express their own ideas rather than simply read a text aloud.

The goal is to connect reading, writing and meaningful Russian-language communication, helping children build a strong foundation in Russian and become increasingly thoughtful, capable and confident readers and speakers.
