“Почемучка” — Russian Through Play

“Почемучка” is the next level of our Russian Through Play preschool program. It is designed for children who are ready not only to understand more Russian, but also to use the language more actively in conversation.

At this wonderfully curious age, children constantly want to know “why?” and “how?” We use that natural curiosity to develop language. Thematic activities encourage children to ask questions, explain what they see, describe situations, listen to others and express their own ideas.

Throughout the year, children explore age-appropriate themes connected with the world around them: family and home, seasons and weather, animals and nature, food, clothing, transportation, professions, holidays, emotions, daily routines and other familiar topics from a child’s everyday life. Each theme introduces new vocabulary and gives children many opportunities to use it in meaningful conversation.

Stories, imaginative games, role play, poems, movement and creative activities help expand vocabulary while introducing more varied and complete sentence structures.

The program also incorporates age-appropriate Russian-language learning materials, educational workbooks, picture cards, language games and tabletop learning activities. Children match, sort, compare, sequence, describe pictures and complete age-appropriate language and thinking tasks. These activities help develop vocabulary, attention, memory, logical thinking and understanding of spoken Russian.

Musical development is an integral part of the program. Through Russian songs, singing, rhythm, movement and musical games, children develop listening skills, auditory memory, coordination, a sense of rhythm and expressive confidence while naturally reinforcing Russian vocabulary and speech.

The program is taught by three teachers, allowing different areas of development — Russian language, learning through play and music — to be guided by educators with their own areas of expertise while remaining part of one connected program.

  HOW WE LEARN

  Children learn through thematic units that connect language, structured learning, exploration, music and play. New vocabulary and language concepts are introduced through conversation, stories, educational materials, picture cards, tabletop games, role-playing situations, poems, songs and creative activities.

  Children work with age-appropriate Russian-language workbooks and learning materials, completing structured exercises and activities that develop vocabulary, comprehension, sentence construction, attention, memory and logical thinking. They describe and compare, answer questions in complete sentences, sequence events, work with pictures and stories, and begin to retell and explain information in their own words.

  Classroom conversation encourages children to expand their answers, formulate more complete sentences, use increasingly varied vocabulary and express their thoughts clearly in Russian.

  Structured learning is balanced with play, movement, music and creative activities, allowing children to develop their Russian naturally while gradually becoming more confident and independent learners.
