ABOUT THE CLASS

Music 1 introduces young children to music through singing, listening, rhythm, movement, musical instruments and active participation.

Children begin each stage of learning with age-appropriate vocal warm-ups and singing exercises that help develop the voice, musical ear, breathing and clear pronunciation. They learn songs gradually, working with melody, rhythm, lyrics and expression.

An important part of the class is exploring musical instruments and their sounds. Children learn to recognize different instruments, listen to their tone and character, and use age-appropriate rhythm and percussion instruments during musical activities.

Rather than experiencing music only as something to hear, children learn to participate in it — to sing, listen, keep a beat, respond to musical changes and express the character and mood of a piece through voice and movement.

Children also learn and rehearse songs for school concerts and special performances, giving them an exciting goal and an early experience of performing together as a group.

The class keeps music joyful and engaging while building a strong foundation for future musical and vocal development.

HOW WE LEARN

Children learn through vocal warm-ups, singing, listening, rhythm exercises, movement, musical games and hands-on exploration of age-appropriate instruments.

Songs are introduced step by step. Children listen to the melody, learn the words, practice rhythm and pronunciation, and gradually bring everything together in a complete song.

Musical instruments and rhythm activities allow children to experience beat, tempo and sound in a hands-on way, while singing develops the voice, musical memory and expressive confidence.

Preparing songs for school concerts and special events is an important part of the program. Children learn to listen to the teacher and to one another, sing together as a group and gradually become comfortable and confident performing for an audience.
